ENGLISH -VINGLISH - SRIDEVI- Movie REVIEW

The Great Gorgeous Beautiful and Marvellous actress of India cinema - SRIDEVI is coming back with a pleasant movie 'English Vinglish'.

It's a tough deal, making a comeback as a Bollywood mainstream heroine when you are close to 50. But then, Sridevi is no ordinary star. In her heydays of the eighties she ruled B-Town without much of a contest, often driving films to blockbuster status without bothering who the hero was.

English Vinglish wholly draws its USP from Sridevi's return 15 years after Judaai, the last role you would care to remember her for. Debutant writer-filmmaker Gauri Shinde's film is a bittersweet dollop, in itself a story that would have made for just another middle-of-the-road flick. If English Vinglish has become a talking point of sorts, it's because the film truly marks the rebirth of a star.

The script casts Sridevi as Shashi Godbole, middle-class Marathi homemaker. For a star whose career was over the years mostly defined by maxed-out glamour and not much else, that in itself is a departure. But then, Sridevi obviously needed to do something far removed from the glittering Hawa hawai image of yore.

She is fantastic in her new found unassuming avatar, balancing the ordinary traits of Shashi with sparks of the zestful diva we have always known her as. Shashi is imagined as an unusual mix - traditional housewife quite conscious of the 'modern' world she can't match, and yet harbouring steely resolve within.

Her problem is she doesn't know English. In a world where that easily translates to being a loser, pronouncing jazz as jhaaj and thinking 'judgemental' refers to a judge gone mental aren't exactly things that win you friends. So, her executive hubby (Adil Hussain) feels she is just good enough to make laddoos at home and her daughter won't take her seriously. Shashi decides to join a spoken English class without telling anyone.

Much of the script is devoted to Shashi's mastering English even as she balances her chores. In the process, she will make a few self-discoveries too, to become a more confident person.

It is a simple story that banks wholly on one character. Sridevi revels once again in trademark screen presence. Her act would be the reason you'd pay to watch this film. Twice.

The film itself is not without its flaws, though. Shinde is impressive with the feel-good portions but she does go over the top with melodrama in a bid to give the film its emotional core.

The prop cast is essentially fitted in to push Shashi's story forward. Adil Hussain (recall the evil Colonel in Agent Vinod) does a restrained job as Shashi's husband. French-Algerian actor Mehdi Nebbou plays out his subtitle-enabled Frenchman's role well.

Not to forget Amitabh Bachchan, in a pivotal one-shot cameo for a scene featuring him with Sridevi. You wish the duo got to share some more runtime together.

Happy Birthday Wishes -Great Actress SRIDEVI-13-August- Biography

Beautiful beyond belief.Versatile.Actor extraordinary. India's Meryl Streep.Thunder Thighs.Elegance and Grace personified.Words fall too short while describing Sridevi's aura.Regarded by many as Indian Cinema's first female superstar, last empress and the only pan-Indian superstar,Sridevi's 44 year old career is something most actresses cannot even dream of.She remains the gold standard for heroines-anything less unacceptable ,anything more unbelievable. So on her 49th birthday,we from Pinkvilla wish her many Happy Returns Of The Day.Many God bless you,and may success touch your feet wherever you go.

Sridevi was born to a South Indian family, to Ayyapan and Rajeswari on 13 August 1963 in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. Her father was a lawyer. She has a sister and two step brothers. Sridevi started her career as a child actor in the 1967 Tamil movie Kandan Karunai playing the role of young Muruga, and acted in many Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies from then on. During her early teens, she acted in a number of Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada movies as a lead actress.Truly,Sridevi was a superstar from the very moment she was in front of the camera. And it fell hopelessly in love with her.

Getting her first big break as a lead heroine,in K. Balachander's Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite rising stars, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan made her a name to reckon with.Rajni and Haasan who would later go on to become the biggest of South Indian superstars, worked with Sridevi in several successive films. So who said Rajni "Khan't"?In front of Sridevi, even Rajni seemed small. At the same time, Sridevi started acting in Telugu movies, with superstars Krishna,Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna, further cementing her position as a megastar in the South, having done which Sri set her eyes on Bollywood, which she was destined to rule for a decade. THE DAWN OF THE EMPRESS'S REIGN:

Sridevi made her debut in Hindi films as a child artist with the film Julie in 1975,and later as an adult in the 1979 release Solva Sawan, which was a commercial flop.Any other actress would turn back dejected, but then Sridevi isn't just any other actress. Her second hindi film Himmatwala (1983) became a big success and established Sridevi as a movie star in Hindi Cinema. The songs and trademark Southern style dances in the film became a rage as did her pairing with Jeetendra with whom she would star in several hits like Tohfa, Mawaali and Justice Chowdhry. While these films brought Sridevi commercial success, she earned critical acclaim for her celebrated performance as a child woman suffering from amnesia in the 1983 film Sadma.

SRIDEVI RULES B-TOWN FOR TEN YEARS AS THE UNDENIABLE NUMBER ONE:

While Himmatwala and Sadma did raise Sridevi to the No.1 position in the industry,it was 1986's supernatural thriller where she played a snake woman that consolidated her position in the industry. The film went on to become the years biggest hit, catapulting Sridevi to superstar status. It proved her capacity to carry a film on her shoulders while the climax song remains the most famous snake dance of Bollywood. This heralded the arrival of a female superstar who could carry a film by the power of her name alone, without any hero. She featured in many more big budget hits in 1986 like Karma and Aakhree Raasta cementing her status. Shekhar Kapur's 1987 hit Mr. India further consolidated Sridevi's position as the top female star.

This is the latest news regarding Sridevi's comeback movie according to the Times of India:Speculation about Sridevi's comeback are now over. It's now certain that she will star in the sequel to the 1987 hit
Mr India. If all goes well, Anurag Basu will direct Boney Kapoor's Mr India 2. Manmohan Shetty, co-producer
of Mr India 2 confirmed this and said, "Anil and Sridevi should be there in the film. We have met Anurag and
asked him to direct Mr India 2. A final decision will be taken on December 11."
Anurag said, "Let's see what happens. But yes, I am in advanced talks to direct Mr India 2." Initially, Shekhar
was asked to direct the sequel but he turned down the offer and had said, "I'm involved with Mr India 2 in the
creative advisory capacity. I don't want to direct it." Buzz is Mr India 2 will have two couples. Anil Kapoor and
Sridevi will play the older couple while the filmmakers are looking for actors who will play the younger couple.
Added to the video clip section a song from the movie Banjaran 1991. The song is Yeh Jeevan Jitni Baar Mile
sung by Alka Yagnik and Mohd Aziz. I love the lyrics of this song and loved to share it with you guys.
Funny song.....back in the day when actresses were allowed to be their natural size and being voluptuous was a good thing for women and when anorexia hadn't completely plagued the nation!
